Goals behind the Jax Art Festival

The festival worked as an interactive platform meant to reveal the cultural dimension of the creative JAX district and present it as a destination for art audiences, under the slogan “JAX… A Curiosity-Led Journey!”.

Its stated aim was to inspire creative exchange by giving artists and companies a stage for performances and workshops, enriching community experience with the arts and helping make culture part of daily life. That mandate sits inside the wider remit of the Ministry of Culture, whose programmes are listed at the ministry’s official site.

The six windows of the Jax Art Festival

The first window, the journey of departure, moved visitors through five stations: New Beginnings, Towards the Unknown, Clarity of Vision, Inside the Fog, and Through Time and Space.

The second, “Realms of Creativity,” held interactive works across five stations, including light installations, artistic installations, the Jax Platform, Satisfy Your Curiosity, and works on the identity of Jax made by international artists drawing on Saudi culture and history.

The third, the XR Studio, offered an extended reality space with audio and visual effects, video art, and two activities, Live the Experience and Exploration Journey, that took visitors on virtual trips across Saudi regions.

The fourth, “A Journey Into the Renaissance Era,” used eight three-dimensional rooms built around pioneers of Italian art. The fifth, “Taste,” brought together local and international restaurants and cafes with musical performances. The sixth, “The Crossing,” was an open area of sculptures and interactive pieces including a giant selfie work, a coffee tree mural, colors on the ground and a thread frame.

Why the JAX district matters

JAX converted industrial warehouses into studios and galleries, and it now anchors contemporary art in the capital region. Its neighbourhood context runs through Diriyah Governorate and the historical components of Diriyah.

The district is also the planned temporary home of a national contemporary art museum, which connects it to arts education in Riyadh and to screen culture covered in the Film Commission.

Planning a visit to JAX today

Programming changes through the year, so check current listings before travelling. The district pairs easily with Al-Thumairi Street and it sits within reach of the Riyadh Metro network. Broader dates are collected in the Saudi festivals calendar.

Final verdict

The 2022 edition is best understood as a proof of concept for JAX itself. The six-window structure showed the district could carry a large public programme and that is why it still shapes how the area is used.
