What is Musa Bin Nusayr Castle
Musa Bin Nusayr Castle is one of most important historical landmarks in Saudi Arabia located in AlUla. This fortress dates back to the sixth century BCE, making it over 2,600 years old. It is one of oldest structures in the ancient city of AlUla.
The castle was built on an elevated location in center of AlUla Old Town to protect residents and watch over the main pilgrimage caravan routes. The town below had about nine hundred homes and this fortress kept everyone safe.
Why Was the Castle Built
The builders chose this location because it was perfect for defense and observation. From the high point they could see everything happening in valley below and protect all the residents. It was like an ancient security system for the entire town.
The Story Behind the Name
The castle is called “Musa Bin Nusayr Castle” because it was named after an important Arab commander named Musa Bin Nusayr who lived there. His name became so connected to the fortress that people still call it by his name today.
How Was the Castle Built
The castle was built using hewn stone placed on top of a small hill. The builders used natural materials from the local area. Over the centuries the castle went through renovations but kept its original character.
The castle has an outer wall with several observation openings and defensive features. It covers an area of approximately 180 square meters and rises about 45 meters above the old town. There is a well carved into the rock at the base for water supply.
The Climb: 300+ Steps
To reach the top you need to climb a stone staircase with more than 300 steps made from local stones. The climb is challenging but worth it because the view from the top is breathtaking. You can see the entire AlUla Old Town and surrounding valley.
Restoration and Preservation
The Royal Commission for AlUla is working to preserve this castle for future generations. They use natural materials and follow traditional construction methods. The restoration follows UNESCO principles and international standards for preserving historical sites.

Musa Bin Nusayr Castle is more than just an old building. It is a remarkable example of ancient engineering and strategy. The castle has survived for over 2,600 years and teaches us about the rich history of Saudi Arabia.
