In a major move to reorganize the retail sector, Saudi Arabia has banned small grocery stores. Known as “baqalas” from selling tobacco products , fresh meat , fruits , vegetables , and even dates .
The new rules were announced by Majed Al Hogail , Minister of Municipalities and Housing. They are already in effect, but store owners have been given a six-month grace period to adjust and follow the new guidelines.
Under the updated regulations:
- Grocery stores can no longer sell :
- Regular cigarettes
- E-cigarettes
- Shisha (hookah)
- Dates
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Fresh meat
These items will now only be allowed for sale in larger stores like supermarkets and hypermarkets . Selling meat will also require a special license .
On the other hand, small shops are now allowed to sell electronics like charger cables and mobile recharge cards , giving them new business opportunities.
📏 Store Size Requirements:
- Grocery stores: Minimum size of 24 square meters
- Supermarkets: Minimum size of 100 square meters
- Hypermarkets: Minimum size of 500 square meters
This reform is part of Saudi Arabia’s effort to modernize its retail industry and improve food safety, public health, and market standards.
