Introduction: Historical Buildings in Jeddah

Why Are These Buildings Important
In 1972 the government made a special law to protect the old buildings in Jeddah. This law helps keep these buildings safe and in good condition. Because of this care Jeddah now has modern services and government buildings next to these historic sites.

Al-Shafi’i Mosque
This old mosque is very special. It is recognized by UNESCO which is a world organization that protects important places. The mosque has been fixed and improved many times to keep it looking like it did in old days. You can still see the beautiful Islamic writings and decorations inside.
Nassif House
This is a famous building where King Abdulaziz, our founding king, lived in 1925. If you visit Jeddah this is one of most important place to see. It shows how families used to live during that important time in our history.
Bait al-Matbouli
This building is over 400 years old. It has four floors and was built using the traditional Hejazi style. When you look at this building. You can see how people built houses long ago using special skills and materials.
Khuzam Palace
This palace is very impressive. Workers spent five years building it and it was finished in 1932. The palace is made from limestone stones and has a strong wall around it that is three meters high. After King Abdulaziz left Nassif House, he moved to this beautiful palace.
Al-Falah School
Did you know that this school was the first official school in Saudi Arabia? A rich businessman from Jeddah opened it in 1905. The old school building is still standing today and you can still see it next to Burhat al-Zubaidi.
Bait al-Sharbatly
This beautiful building was built in 1916. It has been fixed up and improved as part of a big project to save all of Jeddah old buildings. In 2022 a musical group called the “Vertical Orchestra” even played music on one of its balconies during a special event.
Ribat al-Khunji
This building is a great example of old Islamic style. A man named Mohammed al-Khunji built it in 1813. In the past this building was a safe place where old women and women travelers could stay and get help.
