What is Taif Rose Water
Taif rose water comes from beautiful roses grown in Taif. It has a wonderful rose smell that people love. Taif is in the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia, where the weather is perfect for growing roses.
Families in Taif have been making rose water for many generations. They learned this craft from their parents and grandparents. This is not a factory job. It is a family tradition passed down through time.
How is Rose Water Made
Step 1: Collect the rose petals
For each batch, workers collect about 13,000 rose petals. That is a lot of flowers. They pick the roses during harvest season, when the roses are at their best.
Step 2: Heat the petals
They put all the petals in a special pot. Then they apply heat underneath the pot. The heat cooks the petals and releases their natural oils and fragrance. Steam rises up from the pot.
Step 3: The steam travels
A pipe is attached to the pot’s lid. The steam travels through this pipe, carrying the rose scent with it.
Step 4: Cool and collect
The steam enters a container filled with water. The cold water cools down the hot steam. As the steam cools, it turns into liquid droplets. These tiny droplets contain the rose water and fall into a special vessel called “al-Talqieh” (the collector).
Step 5: Mix with fresh water
Now they add fresh water to the collected rose water. Sometimes they also add “al-Arus” (the bride’s) rose water. This is the first, purest rose water from the first batch. They add a certain amount based on how strong they want it to be.
Three Types of Taif Rose Water
The strength of rose water is very different. It depends on how much rose scent it has.
Al-Arus (The Bride’s Rose Water) has about 80 percent rose scent. This is the strongest type. “Al-Arus” means “the bride.” It is the first, purest water from the first pressing. It is so special that it is called the bride. People use it for special occasions because it is expensive and very pure.
Al-Thanou (The Second Water) has about 50 percent rose scent. This is medium strength. “Al-Thanou” means “the second.” It comes from the second batch or pressing. Many families use this type because it is affordable and good quality.
Al-Sayer (The Regular Water) has no more than 20 percent rose scent. This is the lightest type. It is cheaper because it has less rose scent. People who want a light rose scent use this type. It is great for daily use.
A Tradition That Lives On
Taif rose water production is very old. Families have been making it for hundreds of years. Families run small workshops in their homes, and parents teach their children the craft. During harvest season, when the roses are fresh, these workshops become very busy.
